Mission

Meet the immediate need of the Army's deployed and deploying forces for assured, high capacity Internet Protocol (IP) based network services with extended reach, continually enhance network-operating performance, and provide a solid foundation of program management and systems engineering excellence for the increments that follow.

WIN-T Increment 1

Warfighter Information Network Tactical (WIN-T) Increment 1 of 4 allows our Soldiers to communicate “at-the-halt” in any terrain, meaning that if they stay in place, they can use this network to talk to their Commanders and other Soldiers. The system provides high speed, high capacity voice, data, and video communications similar to a home Internet connection to allow communications from any source to be relayed successfully to other Units

Inc 1

Description and Specifications
WIN-T Increment 1 establishes a communications network backbone that provides the full range of audio and visual communications at various echelons and locations using satellite communications nodes that can be coupled with High-Capacity Line-Of-Sight (HCLOS) radio communications and set up at-the-quick-halt to make the Army a more responsive, agile, versatile, lethal, survivable, and sustainable force.

Components:
The three levels of moveable nodes are the Unit (or Division) Tactical Hub, the Brigade (or Joint Network Node-Network (JNN-N)) Hub and the Battalion Command Post Node. The Unit Hub Node is sheltered on the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) platforms, the Brigade node shelter fits on a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and the Battalion Command Post Node is transit case mounted and placed in the Command Post for operations. The Increment 1 network is managed and controlled by Network Operations (NetOps) software.

Capabilities:

  • Range extension and reach back to the Global Information Grid (GIG) using Beyond Line-Of-Sight (BLOS) satellite connectivity
  • Network and satellite connectivity established within 30 minutes of arrival at a new location
  • Seamlessly connects to other Department of Defense (DoD) voice and data communications systems
  • The various levels of nodes are expected to operate for 1,000 hours without failure, assuring reliability

Successes

  • The Army engineered, procured and delivered JNN to a Division designated for a rotation into Iraq within 10 months of the new operational need being identified
  • The Army has continued delivery of JNN/WIN-T Increment 1 and has now completed fielding to nearly half the Active force and Reserve forces
  • Operates at 99 percent reliability as reported by the Units themselves. JNN/WIN-T Increment 1 is a key enabler of standard equipment in the Army’s modular forces
  • JNN/WIN-T Increment 1 introduced high capacity Beyond Line-Of-Sight data transmission capability to Army Combat Battalions for the first time

Special Features
WIN-T Increment 1 connects the warfighter to the Global Information Grid and Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) connectivity down to Battalion level. The system transitions Army networks from proprietary protocols to “Everything Over Internet Protocol (EOIP)”. WIN-T Increment 1 provides for Increment 2 insertions and is scalable to meet mission commander’s requirements.
